Young carers in Devon were able to set sail on an adventure thanks to a fundraising campaign led by the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty team, that award-winning southwest housebuilder Baker Estates have sponsored. The campaign is to recognise the work that the young carers do helping their families.
Funds donated by Baker Estates went towards a young carers sailing trip recently and other trips to enjoy surfing, and canoeing are planned throughout July and August. One youngster who got to enjoy the trip was Maizy, aged 10, from Ivybridge, (pictured) who is a carer for mum Leanna who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.
Graham Hutton, Development Director at Baker Estates, commented: “This is a fantastic campaign to reward young carers in Devon and we are delighted to support the initiative.
“Baker Estates is committed to serving its communities and passionate about building quality new homes which complement their surroundings that will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
Nicky Bailey, communities officer for South Devon AONB, said: “We’re very grateful to Baker Estates for sponsoring our campaign to help young carers in the area enjoy days out along our beautiful coastline.
“Devon Young Carers tell us that caring responsibilities can impact the lives of youngsters in many ways including mental health, education, development and social isolation.
“Their lives have been impacted even more by the coronavirus pandemic, meaning they’ve faced extra stress, pressure and isolation. We felt they deserved the chance of a wonderful day making brilliant memories, in recognition of the amazing work they do for their families.”
