An appeal by a south west housebuilder Baker Estates to help homeless people with donations has gone into overdrive. After a radio interview last month, a number of organisations have come forward to receive financial help.
Baker Estates, an award-winning South West housebuilder, has pledged to donate £2,000 to help the homeless in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset this Christmas.
In the first of three donations, Baker Estates has donated £400 to a new initiative called ‘Sophie’s Army’ which is aiming to help people living on the street feel a little more comfortable this Christmas with warm clothes and food. They also gave Sophie’s Army donations of winter clothes that have been given by kind members of the public.
Sophie’s Army is run by Stacey Spink and Annemarie Bowden who started the initiative in memory of Stacey’s sister who tragically died this year in a car accident. Sophie had always helped people who were less fortunate than herself, often helping the homeless.
Stacey commented: “We cannot thank Baker Estates enough. We will provide the homeless that we have met with shelter this Christmas Eve, so they wake up in a warm bed with a gift.”
Annemarie Bowden, who jointly runs the initiative with Stacey, added: “Anyone wanting to learn more can read about our work on Instagram @sophiesarmy_supportthehomeless and we are really grateful for anyone who supports us. Sophie would be so proud of what we are achieving. Her death was tragic, but at least now we can take solace that something so positive is happening in her memory.”
Ian Baker, Managing Director of Baker Estates, added: “We are delighted to be able to assist the Sophie’s Army campaign. What they are doing is truly amazing and we wish them every success in the future.”
Baker Estates is also collecting clothing and toiletries for the homeless at all of its sales centres and at its head office. Please drop by with any unwanted towels, underwear, thermals, coats, sleeping bags, jumpers, jogging bottoms that are no longer needed.
